All Smiles

If you’ve been training with us for a while, you know that our time on the mats is about so much more than just learning how to escape a grip or secure a dominant position. We are cultivating a mindset.

In Part 1 of this series, we explored the deepest layer of self-defense: protecting your health and vitality. We talked about how the real threats aren't always lurking in dark alleys—often, they are the daily, internal battles that drain our energy and keep us from showing up as our best selves.

Today, we’re adding two more vital pieces to the puzzle. When we practice self-defense, we are also building a fortress around our most precious, non-renewable resources: our time and our attention.

Let’s talk about what that really means in the real world. What Are We “Really” Defending? Part 2: Protecting Your Time & Attention

Imagine this scenario: You’re out running errands on a Tuesday afternoon. You’re focused on getting home to your family, but suddenly, someone cuts you off in the parking lot and gets out of their car. They are having a terrible day, their ego is flaring, and they decide to make it your problem. They step into your space, aggressive and loud.

Because you train JuJutsu, you have a distinct advantage. You have skills. You know exactly how to drop this person, apply a joint lock, and do some serious damage to "teach them a lesson."

Let’s say, in a fleeting moment of frustration, you give in to that urge. You hurt them. The physical altercation ends, you dust yourself off, and you go home thinking you won the fight.

But did you?

Sometimes you gotta get thrown
Throwing Techniques

Fast forward a few weeks. You get a knock on the door or a certified letter in the mail. The person you injured has filed a lawsuit, or perhaps the authorities are stepping in because the force you used was deemed excessive.

Suddenly, your life shifts. For the next six months to a year, where does your time go? It goes to lawyer consultations, depositions, and sitting in courtrooms. Where does your attention go? It’s pulled entirely away from your spouse, your children, your career, and your passions. Instead, your mind is consumed by the stress of the legal system. You toss and turn at night, replaying the event, draining your vitality all over again.

By using your martial arts to hurt someone when it wasn't absolutely necessary, you didn't just break a physical boundary—you handed over the keys to your time and attention. The attacker managed to steal a year of your life without ever throwing a successful punch.

This is why true martial discipline is rooted in quiet confidence and restraint. Yes, we possess the knowledge to hurt someone—but unless our life or the lives of our loved ones are in immediate, unavoidable danger, we shouldn't.

True self-defense is about de-escalation. It’s about having the composure to control a situation without causing unnecessary harm. It’s the wisdom to take a deep breath, neutralize the threat gently if you must, or simply walk away from a bruised ego.

Sometimes you gotta strike

When you know you can defend yourself, you no longer feel the burning need to prove it to a stranger in a parking lot. You realize that your attention is far too valuable to be hijacked by someone else’s bad day. Your time is meant for your family, your goals, and your personal growth—not for a courtroom.

At the end of the day, we train so we can live vibrant, uninterrupted, and peaceful lives. We practice control on the mats so we can maintain control out in the world. Protect your health, guard your time, and choose carefully where you place your attention.

We invite you to join us for an enriching class experience! A heartfelt thank you to our current students for their dedication and enthusiasm; you make our community vibrant and inspiring. YOU are worth defending!

Thought of the Moment: "Just as we guard our physical safety, we must also defend our time and attention against distractions and demands that drain our energy and focus." - Anonymous
