Must We Have a Purpose?

In a video I recently watched with Sadhguru, the Indian yogi and spiritual leader posed an intriguing question: must we have a purpose? His perspective challenges the common belief that we must define our lives by a singular goal or 'why.' Instead, Sadhguru suggests that life, in its vastness, is not confined to a specific purpose, and that being alive is a purpose in itself.

This idea stands in contrast to a previous blog post we shared about "finding your why," where we explored the importance of discovering a personal reason that motivates your journey. For many, defining a purpose can be transformative, providing clarity and a sense of direction. However, Sadhguru's reflection adds another layer to this dialogue—what if there is more freedom in not having a rigid purpose?

Learning Continues Through Exploration

Jiu-jitsu (Jujutsu) is often described as "a living art." Its techniques evolve as students test them on the mats. This principle of continuous learning also applies to life off the mats. Just as we engage with different martial arts styles and techniques to refine our practice, exploring diverse philosophies and perspectives keeps our minds sharp. Sadhguru's view that life doesn't need a defined purpose invites us to reflect on what it means to truly live—perhaps, just as we are.

The Value of Multiple Perspectives

Perspectives are essential

At Self Defense Academy COS, we welcome this kind of discourse. Our approach to self-defense and learning mirrors this openness to different viewpoints. Just like in jujutsu, where multiple strategies and techniques exist to solve a problem, in life, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. By considering both the approach of finding a 'why' and Sadhguru's philosophy, we encourage our students to remain curious and embrace a broader spectrum of ideas.

Self-Defense: More Than Just Physical

Self-defense is not only about physical skills but about mental agility and resilience. The practice of jujutsu teaches us how to adapt, adjust, and sometimes surrender to what is, rather than what we think should be. This concept aligns with Sadhguru's idea of flowing with life rather than being bound by a specific purpose. In both self-defense and life, it's about being present, aware, and able to navigate each moment as it unfolds.
