A Lifelong Bond with Grandmaster Hélio Gracie
In 1953, a young Pedro Valente Sr. began his Jiu-Jitsu journey alongside his father, Dr. Syllo Valente, enrolling at the original Academia Gracie in downtown Rio de Janeiro under the direct tutelage of Grandmaster Hélio Gracie. Dr. Syllo, a naturalist and homeopathic physician, recognized that Jiu-Jitsu was the perfect complement to the human body and character.
In Portuguese, Valente means brave. Growing up, Pedro Sr. was often called upon to prove his family name. Through the art of Jiu-Jitsu, he discovered not only the practical ability to neutralize aggression and bullying without relying on brute strength, but the profound moral confidence that taught him that the highest victory is the avoidance of unnecessary conflict.
Dr. Pedro Valente Sr. emerged as one of Grandmaster Hélio Gracie’s top disciples and closest lifelong confidants, participating in high-profile challenge matches including bouts at Rio’s famous Maracanãzinho stadium. Over fifty-five years of unbroken training directly under Grandmaster Hélio Gracie culminated in his earning the 9th-degree Red Belt—the highest attainable honor—and the revered title of Grand Master.
Excellence in Medicine and Surgery
Grand Master Valente demonstrated that martial arts mastery and intellectual achievement are natural partners—embodying the traditional concept of BunBuRyoDo (the unity of scholar and warrior). Graduating from medical school in 1963, he dedicated his career to plastic surgery and the science of nutrition and recovery.
Applying the principles of hygiene, balance, and discipline he shared with the Gracie family, Dr. Valente became an international authority in surgical excellence, recognized by the New York Times as one of the world’s top plastic surgeons. He also served as Vice President and Chief Physician for Rio’s famed Vasco da Gama football club, revolutionizing athletic conditioning and recovery.
Leadership and Public Service
Grand Master Valente’s dedication extended far beyond private practice and the mats. He answered the call of public duty, serving on two separate occasions as Rio de Janeiro’s Secretary of Health and later as Secretary of Transportation, improving infrastructure, community wellness, and medical access for millions.
The Living Legacy: The 753 Code
Grand Master Pedro Valente Sr. famously said: "The Secret of Jujutsu is in its philosophy." He used the moral compass of the art as the bedrock for raising his sons—Pedro Jr., Gui, and Joaquim—who carry forward this sacred lineage at Valente Brothers HQ in Miami.
Here at Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs, we are honored to preserve this direct lineage. We do not teach sport, tournament competition, or point fighting. We teach the pure, life-saving self-defense system created to empower ordinary people against larger, stronger aggressors, anchored by the discipline of the 753 Code.
