Refining details with our students

Every year, We hear about people choosing a word of the year. This year the word I chose to act as my guiding star, a touchstone to keep me focused and intentional, is Shokunin (職人), a Japanese term that embodies the spirit of craftsmanship. It’s more than just being skilled; it’s about dedication, precision, and a relentless pursuit of perfection in one's craft. I’m excited to share how I plan to weave this powerful concept into the very fabric of myself and Self Defense Academy COS.

The Heart of Shokunin: More Than Just Skill

Shokunin isn’t simply about technical proficiency. It encompasses a deep sense of responsibility, pride in one's work, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. The etymology of the word itself reveals its depth:

  • 職 (Shoku): Occupation, work, duty

  • 人 (Nin): Person

Combined, they paint a picture of someone who is not just doing a job, but who is defined by how they work. It's a calling, a way of life. This resonates deeply with me, especially concerning how we approach training at the academy.

Shokunin: My Anchor for 2024

I've decided to make Shokunin my anchor for the year, applying its principles to every aspect of my life, especially at Self Defense Academy COS. It's about more than just teaching self-defense techniques; it's about cultivating a culture of dedication, discipline, and a genuine pursuit of mastery in every student.

To keep this powerful word at the forefront of my mind, I've created monthly affirmations centered around Shokunin. These affirmations serve as gentle reminders, pulling me back on course whenever I feel myself drifting. Here are a few examples:

  • January: "I embrace the spirit of craftsmanship in all my endeavors, committing to excellence and continuous improvement"

  • April: "My work serves my community and enriches lives."

  • October: "I seek knowledge from all sources, learning as a life long craftsman."

These affirmations act as course correctors. When the daily grind threatens to pull me away from my intention, these affirmations remind me of the deeper purpose behind my work.

Our practice is deeply inspired by Professor Pedro Valente, whose dedication to the art embodies the true essence of Shokunin. His unwavering commitment to detail, his passion for teaching, and his relentless pursuit of excellence are a constant source of inspiration for both myself and our students. It’s this dedication that we strive to emulate in every class.

I’m truly excited to see how Shokunin will shape my year and, more importantly, how it will become woven into the flow of Self Defense Academy COS. I envision a training environment where every student, regardless of their skill level, embraces the spirit of craftsmanship, striving for continuous improvement and taking pride in their progress.
