Training for Life: Why "Serious Play" is the Secret to Real Self-Defense

At Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs (SDA-COS), we often get asked: "Do you guys spar?" The answer is yes. But probably not in the way you’re thinking.
We recently came across a video by Jesse Enkamp titled "I'm begging you to stop sparring," and we couldn't agree more with the core message. In the martial arts world, there is a toxic "tough guy" culture where sparring is seen as a way to "beat each other up" to prove who is the alpha.
At our academy, we reject that. We believe sparring is an infinite game, not a finite one. Here is why our approach to sparring is designed to make you better at Jiu-Jitsu—and better at life.
The Goal: Growth, Not Damage
In the video, Jesse highlights how elite fighters like Max Holloway and Georges St-Pierre have shifted away from "heavy" sparring. Why? Because when you are constantly in a "fight or flight" state, your brain actually stops learning. High levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) kill neuroplasticity.
In our kimonos, we practice what we call "Serious Play." When we step onto the mats to spar, our intention is to make each other better.
We aren't here to "win" a gym round: If you’re only focused on winning, you’ll never take risks. If you never take risks, you’ll never learn new techniques.
We protect our partners: We train with doctors, lawyers, teachers, and parents. No one should have to go to work with a black eye or a broken nose just to learn self-defense.
We value "Losing": As the video mentions, "losing" a round is actually winning a lesson. It’s an opportunity to see where your defense is weak and how to improve it.
Sparring as a Metaphor for Life

Let’s be honest: sparring is inevitably uncomfortable. Having someone apply pressure on you is a physical and mental challenge. But that is exactly the point.
The fundamental principle of the Valente Brothers JuJutsu method we follow is preparation. Life is going to put pressure on you whether you want it or not. Whether it’s a high-stress situation at work, a personal crisis, or a physical confrontation, the world doesn't care if you're "ready."
By sparring in a controlled, playful, yet "serious" environment, you learn how to keep your composure under pressure. You learn to breathe when things get tight and think clearly when the "chaos" starts. We don't spar to become better "fighters"; we spar to become more resilient human beings. Our Philosophy: The 753 Code
Everything we do is guided by the 753 Code. We focus on the physical, mental, and spiritual pillars of martial arts. This means our training isn't just about the physical technique; it’s about the spirit in which you use it.
When you spar with us, you’re entering a community that values your safety and your growth. We want you to be able to train for the next 40 years, not just the next 4 months.

To Our Current Students: We Are Grateful
To our current students at SDA-COS: thank you. We are incredibly grateful for the trust you place in us and for the culture you help build. It is your commitment to being great training partners—prioritizing each other's safety and growth over your own egos—that makes our academy a special place. You are the reason we can keep the "game" going indefinitely.

Thought of the Moment: "Mastery isn't born from the stress of survival, but from the freedom of play; we don’t practice to win the round, we practice to stay in the game long enough for the lesson to reveal itself." - Anonymous
