The "Hard Way" vs. The Right Way: Is Your Jiu-Jitsu Designed for Athletes or for Humans?

Is Jujutsu only for the Tough?

In our weekly instructors’ meeting, we recently discussed a profound insight shared by Professor Pedro Valente. He laid out two very different ways that Jiu-Jitsu is represented in the world today.

The first is what we might call Jiu-Jitsu through Natural Selection. It’s the "dog-eat-dog," thick-skinned, survive-if-you-can approach. In these environments, the strong thrive, the aggressive win, and if you aren’t a natural-born athlete, you’re basically just a human bowling pin for the competitors.

The second is JuJutsu for Development. This is the Valente Brothers method we practice here at Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs. It’s the process of slowly, methodically developing a human being—regardless of their starting point—until they can execute techniques with precision rather than raw power.

The Helio Gracie Mandate: Self-Defense for Everyone

Grandmaster Helio Gracie once wrote a letter to Professor Pedro Valente with a message that remains our North Star: Self-defense must be accessible to everyone.

Let’s be real—if you’re 22, train six days a week, and have the lung capacity of a blue whale, the probabilities of you winning a fight are already in your favor. But what about the professional with a 9-to-5? The parent with a mortgage? The person who has "life" as their main priority?

JuJutsu was never meant to be a club for the elite few who can survive a meat grinder. It was designed so that a person with good technique can neutralize someone trying to use brute force. At our academy, being physically fit is a byproduct of the journey, but it isn’t the prerequisite for the technique to work.

The Tragedy of the "Tainted" Lesson

Teaching a group from a local high school that they are worth defending.

Professor Pedro once shared a story about a person who told him they would never try Jiu-Jitsu again. Why? Because they took one lesson and got hurt. The person they were paired with used "Natural Selection" tactics—force, aggression, and ego—and it ruined their perception of the art.

Their view of Jiu-Jitsu was tainted because they weren't offered the alternative. They didn't know there was a method designed to protect the student while they learn to protect themselves. At Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs, we are proud to offer that alternative. We don't believe you should have to get injured just to learn how to avoid getting injured.

The Only Metric That Matters: Making it Home

In the world of sport grappling, people care about points, medals, and "tapping out" opponents. At our academy, we have a different bar for success.

We’ve had students who’ve had to use their JuJutsu "in the wild." Every single one of them made it home safely. That is the only "win" we care about. We don't ask, "Did you break his arm?" or "Did you get the choke?" We ask, "Did you get out of the situation and get back to your family?" Our goal isn't to turn you into a cage fighter; it’s to give you the confidence to navigate the world safely.

A Note to Our Current Students (Our Favorite "Kimono-Clad" Weirdos)

To our current students: we are incredibly grateful for you. Honestly. We know that choosing to spend your evenings learning how to escape headlocks instead of sitting on the couch is the best kind of "special." We appreciate your dedication to the 753 Code and the way you represent our school. You guys make the academy what it is (even if some of you still forget where you left your water bottles).
